Man United star Antonio Valencia wins goal of the month

Antonio Valencia’s stunning volley against Everton has been crowned the Premier League goal of the month for September.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial were also on the scoresheet, while Romelu Lukaku returned to haunt his former club — but it was Valencia’s strike which stole the show in the 4-0 drubbing at Old Trafford.

Nemanja Matic swept the ball across the face of Everton’s 18-yard line as it bounce on the edge of the box en route to the United defender.

The ball stood up nicely for Valencia, who lashed his right foot at it and sent it flying beyond the helpless Jordan Pickford in the Everton goal.

‘I am delighted to receive this award for Carling Goal of the Month and I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me,’ Valencia said.

‘It’s a goal that I am proud of, I just hit it into the back of the net and then heard the crowd erupt at Old Trafford.

Valencia missed Ecuador’s 3-1 loss to Argentina, which saw Lionel Messi and Co book their place at next year’s World Cup.

But the right back is in line to return when United face the old foe Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime — and will hope to emulate his venomous volley against this weekend’s Merseyside opposition.
